The overall objective of SOLSTICE is to enable the optimal exploitation of the potential for PV installations in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. This will be achieved by enhancing the commissioned national solar irradiance cadastre.

SOLSTICE will 1) add information on the suitability of facades for PV installations, 2) improve shadow-modelling throughout the seasons using high-resolution 3D geometry of buildings and infrastructure, 3) incorporate the latest solar radiation flux model and 4) cross-evaluate and quality control the 3D geometry from the commissioned cadastre and that derived by SOLSTICE.

The project aims at yielding cutting edge research results as well as advancing scientific knowledge for future development of innovative methods and processes in the fields of geospatial engineering, renewable energy generation and digitalization. 

Following tasks will be necessary:

  • to implement an automated classification of the integrated aerial LiDAR and photogrammetric point clouds to extract 3D building morphologies throughout the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg.
  • to design a model with GIS software for finding the most suitable locations on roofs and façades for optimal PV installations without reduction factors such as shadowing and complex areas. Expected yield reductions will be classified.
  • to compute geographically the PV potential of extracted roofs and façades on a daily basis and of adequate averages. Thus, the SOLSTICE products will help in estimating the annual power generation of each PV installation and consequently will bring solar energy forward in Luxembourg.
  • to integrate with the commissioned national solar irradiance cadastre and visualize the SOLSTICE results of the PV potential in a 3D model with a focus on façades.
  • to coordinate with Myenergy and the company providing the national solar irradiance cadastre on the general reporting and visualization of the PV potential. All these data will be connected to the property parcels and addresses through the National Geoportal.
  • to design the SOLSTICE products in an open and industry standard format to allow access by a wide spectrum of interested users and stakeholders.
  • to cross-evaluate and quality control the commissioned national solar irradiance cadastre and that of SOLSTICE, investigating the impact on PV potential due to the improved high-resolution 3D geometry, the inclusion of façades, advanced shadow modelling, and improved solar radiation flux modelling.
  • to archive the SOLSTICE products at the Open Data platform Luxembourg in order to facilitate private and public stakeholders to create derivative products requiring 3D geometry information.

The outcome of the project will be published in highly-ranked, peer-review journals and will thus contribute to advance the state-of-the-art in the related fields. The project will also strengthen the development of competences and skills at the University of Luxembourg through its international and trans-disciplinary network and collaborations.
